James Coughlan talks to us about how he advanced his vision of empowering well-being and productivity as Reef Global’s CEO and founder.

Can you introduce your start-up? What is it, and how did it come about?

We are creating the third work space for companies across the globe, helping support their employees well-being & mental health when incorporating hybrid working.

Reef-Creating the Third Workspace

Where are you in your startup journey?

We are launching in September 2021.

To date, what has been the biggest triumph for your business?

We have won some well-known hospitality group brands to be a venue on the app.

Are you a co-founder? If so, how have you found it? And do you have any advice for partners working alongside each other on how to make that business relationship work?

Yes, having other heads to bounce ideas off, as well as to put in the work needed to hit the ground running. The best 2 things to keep in mind are transparency & communication. I email a weekly update to all co-founders to keep them updated, to help with their plans & strategies, as well as keeping the momentum going.

How do you manage balancing growing a start-up with having a personal life?

Understanding the importance of switching off. No-one can be effective for long periods of time.

How do you cope with the pressures that come with building a business?

Having built a business before, I have learned from many mistakes, which has given me a better insight this time. I think the key phrase that sticks with me is that there is no point in stressing over an outcome you can’t change.

If you could name one thing that you wish you knew when you started, what would it be?

About Robot Mascot, so I could be a lot further ahead in my fundraising journey.

To date, what have been your most important lessons?

If you want investment, invest yourself. The more traction you have before you go for investment, you will receive more interest as well as a better deal.

Do you have any tips or advice for anyone thinking about starting up their own business, or who has just started their journey?

Make sure before you go all in, have a plan & a strategy. This will usually answer the fundamental question of “will it work?” Throw the idea at a few friends & family to get their feedback and tell them to be critical. Then if all looks great, don’t wait. Just go for it.

What has been the most challenging part of your start-up journey so far?

Creating all documents that are needed for investment. I just wasn’t aware of how much you need and the amount of time needed to put aside to create all the documentation.

What’s next for your business?

Hopefully hitting our raise target and launching in September 2021!
